Yes, registering with the Police department of the city is a must. All they need (at least in San Jose) is your name, driver's license number etc. They will register it.
You dont need permit for walking on sidewalks. You need permit only if you plan to stop traffic and block streets. None of us want to do that.
Check with your city's police department and find out how to register for march on sidewalks without stopping traffic. I guess that's a lot easier than getting permits to stop traffic etc.
Now, as to rallies other than San Jose rally, if you plan to lead the rally and get the event registered, then please email me at jay@Immigrationvoice.org and I will help you get members. I have list of all members and their states and once you finalize the event, I will email the entire list and point them to you. I will also provide you with material, guidance and Immigration voice's message and talking points should you be approached by a reporter. AS for GC, I have a coworker whose dad, the primary applicant , passed away, and only 1 dependent was able to continue process and just recently got his GC. Most likely, your wife will not be forced to return home.

Fact is the modern western cultures that empower women, encourage them to the workplace, make contraception/abortion freely available and make alternative lifestyles a choice, leads to a drop in fertility rates. The above makes it an imperative to import labour and yes sheer people to take care of the old and infirm, to keep the service sector rolling even if manufacturing etc is outsourced. The only question is what kind of immigration and how much of it. In short the answer is the USA is not a dumb country, it generally always acts in its self interest faced with these choices. I believe EB immigration will soon be liberalised. This would be a smart thing especially if coupled with a crackdown on illegal immigration.
US population is growing yes, but the elderly population is exploding. More are getting older (baby boomers) and once there there they are sticking aroung longer. I wish there was a measure of working age population only, the growth of that population is probably much less than that of the general population.

Been in the US since 1998, have an EB-2 PD of 2001, have played by the rules all along. Still no GC... And, the dates are going back to 2000 from the new year.. I've lost hopes...
I'm pretty close to getting clinical depression because of this game played by USCIS, Labor Dept, FBI and my own bad luck.
SKILL bill, OMNIBUS, etc. comes and goes. IV does seem to be doing things to lobby for the community, but let's face one reality. Like a news article said, no one in congress or senate wants to touch immigration even with a long pole until 2009.
The US has been very good to me (other than the GC part), more than my home country (India) which is why I'm still here.

You should see the paper copy of receipts in your mail box today as I already got mine monday.Still waiting on my wifes. Was your at NSC too.. I wrote my name on the checks to differentiate. So I knew they were mine.
My attorney is not organized man. he is #$$%%%^. so worried whether he sent it or not. Is your wife working too by any chance.

Now, it has happened more than a few occassions that I've come across words that I had no clue about.... and this was one such moment. The dictionary bot came up with a blank face, expressing its helplessness. Looking at the results, I'm assuming you meant "generalizing".... clueless me couldn't figure that out sooner.. :)
Nothing like such amusing moments, thanks to IV, to bring cheer to an otherwise dark & gloomy day (well, mostly... in California a little overcast weather for about half a day can cause the much-feared Seasonal Affective Disorder (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/seasonal-affective-disorder/DS00195) (SAD) to some... :) )

(disclaimer: Like everyone else here, I am very dissapointed. Hence the negative mood)
I am wondering how we ended up here. We have been doing this campaign for so long, we have now hired a lobbying firm, and we've met, called, emailed and faxed so many senators etc. How come this bill completely ignored, and in fact in some senses, hurt us?
I have seen posts about lawmakers being stupid, out-of-touch etc but I think these posts are mostly facetious. I feel troubled by the fact that in spite of numerous efforts the lawmakers decided to ignore us - and if this was India I would have attributed this to the fact that in us they don't (yet) have a vote bank.
Please take this post in a positive way and as a stimulus for some soul searching - why did we end up in this situation?

I am very new to this forum and have been spending some time here just over the past few weeks. I am trying to learn the ropes of this EB green card system. As someone pointed, I belong to those on the "fence" not knowing what or how to be effective with my time and money in these efforts. I like this thread and I think I want to begin my involvement through this effort.
My opinion is that we don't need a 1000 people to contribute to reach $100000 for the effort. Those who are willing to give $100 would not, I think, hesitate to give another $100 or even more to speed up the process. I for one will contribute $200 and if necessary more for this effort.

You can not really change point based system and u can not ask for that..they are the policy makers..they are responsible for there own country.
We should only ask
- Clear the backlog for EB people as FB without country quota
- Allow all backlogged people to continue on old system (h1b renewal/3 year extension until date of enactment.
If all backlogged is cleared then for merit based people..
- There is no LC or PERM..u can file adjsutment of status just as canada or Australia. ur PD will be current as backlogged is being cleared.You can continue to enjoy AC-21 after I-485.
- You don't need H1b renewal 1 year or 3 year..

USCIS should seperate North Indians and South Indians - We are soooo very different anyways ..... Different language - different look - different food ..... That way all of us North Indians will get our GC sooner :D

That way Maharashtrians who are thought to be North Indians by people from Kerala and thought to be south Indians by people from Punjab, will finally know if they will get their GC in time. I got some good news. I called uscis just now and got two receipt numbers, one for 485 and one for EAD. Checks not cashed yet. I don't have the receipt number for AP yet. So it seems that our box is not lost and they're processing them, though so slowly. My application arrived on 7/3 at NSC, received by R. William at 9:03am.
Hope every one of us will receive our receipts, EAD and AP asap.

Just for everyone's info, I received all my receipt notices(485,EAD,AP) today including for my wife and son. Applications were received at NSC on July 3rd and finally transferred to TSC because my I-140 was approved from there in Nov 2006. I saw a LUD on approved I-140 on 8/5/07. My checks were not cashed until 8/31 when my attorney last checked. My guess is that these were cashed around 1st week of sept.
One important thing I want to mention that my attorney hadn't filled in my A# from I-140 into I-485. He entered it as "None" and I was worried of any negative effect, but USCIS correctly figured it out and mentioned this no. on all my receipt notices.
However, they mixed up the nos. for my son and wife's receipts. My wife's 485 receipt has my son's A#. My attorney went ahead and contacted USCIS right away.
I hope everyone get receipts soon.

You are absolutely right. These frauds need to be stopped. Because of this fraud H1b quota is used up on the very first day and EB3 India has a backlog of seven years. If USCIS weed out all the frauds, I bet the wait for EB3 india will be no more than 3 years.
You are already out of status as H1 accounts for continuous employment along with regular pay. H1 visa, job and pay go hand in hand. Any one component missing means you are out of status.
There is no grace period. As the earlier member said, it is a gray area without any specific guidelines. I have seen people stay out of job (status) for 4 months and have used portability or consulate stamp upon getting a new job. It all depends on the IO.
BTW, did you ever realize how unethical it is to use a consultant for acquiring a H1 visa without actually having a fulltime job? For last 7 years I am on H1 myself and have played by rules� I hate people who false represent the facts for immigration benefits.
Because of people like you genuine candidates who have legitimate jobs are left out as you guys get lucky in the lottery even though you don�t have a regular fulltime job. My wife was forced to stay at home for almost 3 years because of people like you.. FYI she had a job offer (from a F500 Inc.) but people like you got lucky when it came to H1 lottery. Not just that but people like you give a bad name to legal immigrant community.

If the Dems win control of the Senate, I expect no major changes for us. The amnesty bills are already passed easily in the Senate as is anyway. That doesn't change anything for us there.
In the House, this will be a close race. Even if Dems barely win in the House, what is less likely, then they may well find themselves struggling again to get major votes for the amnesty bills. Remember that the amnesty bills got rejected in the House by large margin - and - enforcement only bills got approved there widely. Our stand alone SKULL bill - not sure whether that will be considered by Democrats. Democrats will probably address the Dream Act before they take over the SKULL bill. Let them pass Dream Act, and then we, the Employment Base applicants will be in a real dream for a long time.

At least with DEMS there is close to surety of passing one Immigration Bill even if it is CIR.... With REPs, we will never see any bill the light of day... Not sure which world you live in but check out numbersusa site and you will see how they are trying to decrease the immigration - legal or illegal alike.... So while Skill will go through Senate, it will be again blocked in house like it was in Dec2005........ So bottomline is that I would rather have some bill passed and have a hope in sight than no bill and never know if one will ever get GC
If the Dems win control of the Senate, I expect no major changes for us. The amnesty bills are already passed easily in the Senate as is anyway. That doesn't change anything for us there.
In the House, this will be a close race. Even if Dems barely win in the House, what is less likely, then they may well find themselves struggling again to get major votes for the amnesty bills. Remember that the amnesty bills got rejected in the House by large margin - and - enforcement only bills got approved there widely. Our stand alone SKULL bill - not sure whether that will be considered by Democrats. Democrats will probably address the Dream Act before they take over the SKULL bill. Let them pass Dream Act, and then we, the Employment Base applicants will be in a real dream for a long time.
